Replace Damaged Roof Shingles Step 1

Loosen the adhesive under the five tabs in the second row above the damaged "3-tab" shingle; it's end seams are lined-up 6 or 12 inches off to one side of the damaged one. Now first loosen the exposed nails by sliding your flat-pry-bar under the shingle and working around the nail shaft (shank). •Carefully lift each tab about 45 to 60 degrees -- to not crack or break them (old shingles become quite brittle); you will see the nails that (also) pierce and hold the top edge of the damaged shingle.
•Withdraw exposed nails by using the pry-bar. Be careful to not crack of break old or cold, brittle, asphalt shingles or replace those as well.

Replace Damaged Roof Shingles Step 2

Loosen adhesive underneath lift the tabs in the first row above the damaged shingle and withdraw the loosened nails from that shingle with the pry-bar by using the same process. These are the nails that pierce and attach the main body of the damaged shingle.

Replace Damaged Roof Shingles Step 3

Loosen adhesive underneath the tabs of the damaged shingle, which can now be removed.

Replace Damaged Roof Shingles Step 4

Place a new shingle in the same position from which the damaged shingle was removed, nail it and then re-nail the shingle above.
